Vienna: Bass+ DJ Contest

Bass plus

In New Bass We Trust: Bass+ and discodemons.net are looking for new DJs in town to rock the Wall Of Bass at SUB Club at the next Bass+ party on Friday, May 24th 2013. If you think you’ve got what it takes, follow these three steps to participate in the contest. Good luck!

Record a mix. It should be about 30 minutes long, apart from that there are no restrictions to your creativity. However, this contest is held by a bass club, so if you’re into progressive trance please reconsider your chances here.

Send it to competition@bassplus.at until May 10. Please use SoundCloud, WeTransfer or a similar service to submit your mix. The subject line of your email should be “In New Bass We Trust” and the email should include your full name, phone number and maybe a few details about yourself: – where are you from? – when did you start DJing? – what equipment do you need?

Play the Wall Of Bass on May 24. The best mixes will be presented here on the blog, and one winner will be selected to play at SUB Club in Wiener Neustadt on May 24 along with the Bass+ Residents and Disco Demons. Bonus: you get 5 guestlist slots so you can bring your friends too.

Win: SKIP&DIE Tickets, B72 Vienna

SKIP&DIE

Ever wondered what the (highly unlikely) brainchild of Louis Jordan and M.I.A. might sound like? Me neither, but I can tell you this much: SKIP&DIE are probably as close as it gets. South African singer meets Dutch producer, jazz meets electro, funk meets Cumbia – seamlessly topped off by infectious vocals that will stick to your head faster than you can say Diplo.

I happen to have two tickets for their show at B72, Vienna on Wednesday, March 13 to give away – if you want them, just email me at win@discodemons.net (make sure to include your full name for the guest list) and keep your fingers crossed. The band will be supported by the equally amazing Viech, more info + Facebook event here. The winners will be announced on Tuesday.

Jägerverb Austria Tour | pres. by discodemons.net

Jägerverb Austria Tour presented by Disco Demons

It’s been a bit quiet around here for a few days, mainly due to partying and studying, which are, when done excessively, not a good combination in terms of creative productivity. Anyway, we’re back on track now here at Disco Demons headquarters, and the occasion is a very happy one: for the first time ever, discodemons.net has invited an artist that has been a regular name here on the blog for an exclusive mini tour through this nice little country we call our home. Enough beating around the bush, I’m of course talking about Jägerverb!

Friday, March 1st | Solaris, Linz

The first course will be quite a special party at Solaris, Linz, as Aka Tell (also known as “Mr. Hangover Sessions“) and my humble self will be celebrating our birthdays that night, supported by our good friend Cerny. And because the best things in life are free, there’s going to be free entry all night long.

Saturday, March 2nd | Grelle Forelle, Vienna

As for the second night, my boys from WEARETHESH.IT will be hosting a floor at Grelle Forelle, one of Vienna’s best clubs, on Saturday, March 2nd with Jägerverb headlining, supported by Aka Tell, Disco Demons, The Shit Is Coming Home, Slutotronic (yes, that guy from Italy whom I can not thank enough for creating the wonderful artwork for the tour) and Bört.

More details on both nights will be added soon.
If you want to add dates feel free to contact me at discodemons@gmail.com

Erol Alkan 10 Hour DJ Set | March 28, London

Erol Alkan 10 hour DJ set

As each and every Easter Thursday since 2008, living legend Erol Alkan will be playing one of his infamous marathon sets at Fire, London on March 28. Starting out rather harmlessly with a five hour set in 2008, Erol has added an hour each year until reaching the final conclusion now in 2013 by doubling the initial numbers: this year’s epic ten hour set will be his last Easter marathon ever.

“As is tradition the first part of the set begins in candlelight with Erol playing anything from beat-less ambience to psych and disco dubs. The journey then wends its way through techno, house, vintage disco with the odd pop and rock classic thrown in.”

Starting as early as 9pm, Erol will be playing continuously until 7am, showcasing not only physical endurance but also an exceptionally deep understanding of all kinds of music. Early bird tickets are available on Bugged Out. More details on the Facebook event page.

Waves Vienna 2012 | Friday

Waves Vienna, here we go again. The rings under my eyes are starting to make me look like a panda bear, the list of bands I want to see is getting shorter and the list of bands I need to start keeping an eye on in the future is growing longer: looks like I have survived day two of three.

Before I continue writing, let me set something straight first: I consider myself a huge fan of both Kavinsky‘s music and the accompanying visual concept, the fictional character who died in a car crash in a Ferrari. That’s for that. Having said that, I’ve never seen a DJ that actually managed to fuck up almost every single mix – and still keep everybody on the floor happy and dancing. If there’s one single DJ on earth who deserves to be called a rock star, it’s probably Kavinsky. Even if it’s just for having Mehdi’s (R.I.P.) face tattooed on his left arm. So much for that.

I’ve also managed to catch some bits of Addison Groove‘s set at Pratersauna but he was almost finished playing when we got there (plus it was 5 am already), so I can’t really say much about that except that his set seemed to range from 90 BPM to 140 and I liked that.

I’m not entirely sure yet why I decided to start this article with the last artist I saw last night, but it looks like I’ll have to last night’s story in reversed chronological order. The Soundtrack Of Our Lives were playing their last show ever yesterday at Flex, which more or less set the course for the concert as you could feel that both the audience and the band were aware of this fact for the entire time and tried to have as good a time as possible. After one hour of amazing psychedelic-fueled rock n roll they played an encore of almost another full hour – a last show fit for kings.

Toy live at Flex.

The first two bands I saw yesterday were Sea & Air and Fenster (above photo), both from Germany. Both shows were sort of special because the bands were playing for a small audience on a boat going upstream the Danube right as the sun was setting, creating an intimate atmosphere that a club could never be able to provide.

Waves Vienna, one more time!

Waves Vienna 2012 | Thursday

So the first day/night of Waves Vienna 2012 has come to an end but fortunately there are two more coming up, so here’s a quick round-up to find out what you have missed out on last night.

“If it’s a funeral, let’s have the best funeral ever.” In celebration of the opening ceremony of the festival, “Shut Up And Play The Hits” was screened at Gartenbaukino. Considering myself a fan of LCD Soundsystem’s music I really enjoyed the long live scenes and breathtaking moments from their last concert ever at Madison Square Garden, NY – but also had to witness James Murphy trying very hard not to try too hard to look down to earth and likeable while endlessly cuddling with his schizophrenic pug. (Was that a proper sentence? I’m obviously still struggling with the aftermaths of last night).

To be honest there’s not much to say about Dillon: either you’ve seen her or you haven’t. If you haven’t, it’s pretty hard to explain what exactly is going on at her shows. What is sure is that her voice is nothing short of unbelievable, conveniently filling out entire rooms backed by dark synth sounds, creating alien atmospheres. The setting for her show couldn’t have been better: the old Odeon theater with it’s big hall, a room so tall you couldn’t really see the ceiling, dimly lit and pillar-framed – an amazing overall experience.

My surprise of the evening were definitely Tu Fawning, a four-headed band from Portland, OR I’ve never heard of before to be honest, but then again, that’s what festivals are there for: discovering amazing artists because by accident. Anyways, their show at Clubschiff was out of this world, using trumpets, violins and timpani to create a dark, dramatic live experience that completely blew me (and I think everyone else who has been there) away. Haven’t seen so much energy on a stage in quite a while.

Next I initially wanted to go to Fluc Wanne to see Ghostpoet, but as it was pretty crowded there and things never happen the way you expect them to happen at festivals we somehow ended up at Pratersauna two hours later right in time for Rustie’s set, a solid blend of dubstep and hip-hop that didn’t fail to make the crowd go crazy.

Waves Vienna, it has been beautiful with you last night, I honestly can’t wait to see you again tonight!
